Greetings Leaders!
I was sitting at Starbucks yesterday morning day trading, when a very casual acquaintance came up and asked me where I thought the economy was going. I shrugged. He then proceeded to tell me that President Obama was a communist and heathen and that the he was (apparently) single-handedly responsible for destroying our country. He was very passionate about his message, and when I tried to ask about all the things he inherited, I basically got ignored. Remembering the saying “don’t throw pearls before swine”, I just let the conversation, albeit one-sided, die.
I began to think, wow. People aren’t thinking. Our country is in a mess. But we didn’t get here over night. I would hazard a guess that we can go back 200 years and find contributing factors. On the other hand, our country is also great and we could also list a lot of things that contributed to our greatness.
Here is a message to our political leaders though. This gentleman at Starbucks didn’t get here alone. He was manipulated by the media and the political parties. If we are ever going to recover as a nation, we’re going to have to recover our ability to think.
By feeding people garbage on television and radio talk shows about how bad President Obama is, or how George W. Bush was, we are only going to divide our country further. Nothing good can come of this. If Republican’s somehow gain back the majority in Congress, they will still be unable to move our country in the right direction, because the country will be divided. Just because you’re in the driver’s seat doesn’t mean you are necessarily in control.
So to our political leaders – help America think rationally. It is easy to prey on the fear of the masses. It is much harder to help them understand.
All the best!
All the time!
